OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, OH, USA. The Solar battery invented by a team of researchers is a huge success. It is a combination of a battery and a solar cell which is very unique, as it is somewhat similar to a rechargeable battery but it runs on light and air.
According to the inventor, they combined the use of low-cost battery and solar panel which is very efficient. In the process where electrons make their way in a battery and a solar cell there is always energy loss. Usually, only 80% of the electrons make it to the battery, which is a waste. Because of this innovation, almost all of the electrons are contained for use.
This invention was led by Yiying Wu, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Ohio State University. The idea was taken from some features of an earlier battery that Wu and Xiaodi Ren, a doctoral student, had created. It was a a high-efficiency air-powered battery that discharges by chemically reacting potassium with oxygen. As for the new battery, the struggle was that it was not possible for the air to enter the battery because of the solar cells. It was made up of solid semiconductor panels. The team created a solar mesh panel wherein air penetrates the battery and then follows a method for converting electrons bonded by solar panel and the battery electrode. Chemical reactions of light and air inside the battery are what make the charging process.”Basically, it’s a breathing battery,” Wu said. “It breathes in air when it discharges, and breathes out when it charges.”
The solar battery will soon be licensed to marketing by the Ohio State University. Further research in advancements will also be continued by the research team. Financial support is also provided by the U.S. Department of Energy. When it comes to renewable energy, everyone’s aim is to support and keep the cost at everyone’s reach.
