How China’s new Seagull EV is shaking up the US auto industry

By Jorge Hurtado

Since its debut in 2023, the Seagull electric vehicle from Chinese manufacturer BYD has evolved from a newcomer to a significant player in the automotive industry. Initially underestimated, the Seagull gained momentum as BYD’s sales surged. This has challenged the status quo of the American auto industry.

BYD has also begun introducing its stellar product worldwide. This has threatened the costly electric vehicle (EV) production methods in Europe and North America. These cars are becoming popular in Australia, Singapore, and Thailand, partly due to the low price tag.

What is the BYD Seagull?

Seagull is a compact and budget-friendly electric vehicle manufactured by BYD, a leading Chinese EV manufacturer. With its small battery capacity of 38.88 kWh, the efficient vehicle can travel ~250 miles per charge (405 km). The EV can reach up to 81 mph (130 kmph).

BYD reduces its cost by manufacturing many parts, including electric motors, dashboards, bodies, headlights, and batteries. This small electric vehicle uses lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFPs), a type of lithium-ion battery (LIBs) that is cheaper to produce.

The BYD Seagull EV is 900 pounds lighter than the Chevrolet Bolt, a slightly larger electric vehicle by GM. This weight reduction is achieved through a minimalist design featuring a single windshield wiper, which reduces components and eliminates extra motors. BYD also uses smaller, lighter battery packs and lightweight interior and exterior materials. BYD’s vertical integration also streamlines design and manufacturing, reducing excess components and engineering costs.

How much does the Seagull cost?

In China, the Seagull is priced at around USD 12,000, offering a cost-effective option. This contrasts with the average vehicle purchase price in the US, which stands at $40,000. However, the model is currently not available in North America.

Due to its low price tag, BYD sold 526,409 electric cars within three months of launching. This sales volume in April 2023 surpassed Tesla’s record sales. The increasing accessibility of more affordable EVs is compelling automakers to reconsider their production strategies to be faster and more cost-effective.

BYD has already started exporting cars to Brazil and Mexico, where the price of the Seagull EV is about USD 20,000. Furthermore, BYD is in talks to begin manufacturing EVs in Mexico.

Is Tesla still dominating the EV market?

Experts forecast that BYD will dominate 2024’s electric vehicle sales due to its aggressive pricing strategies and diverse lineup, which includes hybrids. In 2023, these tactics helped BYD achieve nearly 1.6 million EV sales, surpassing Tesla’s sales figures. The Chinese company sold ~3 million passenger cars, including hybrid vehicles, in the same period.

Conquering the American frontier:

BYD aims to make a global impact. However, challenges loom on the horizon. This includes trade investigations into subsidies and potential tariffs on imported vehicles. In the US, these tariffs have been set to 100%. Yet, with its competitive pricing and performance, the Seagull poses a significant threat to established American automakers.

American automakers acknowledge that Chinese automakers are producing cars of global quality at significantly lower prices. This disparity stems from China’s aggressive pursuit of market share and advancement in manufacturing.

The US must invest significantly in transforming its auto manufacturing into a sustainable one. By 2035, there is a possibility that a plan to mandate electric vehicle purchases will be implemented. If the US lags while China leads, the investments in automakers may not yield the desired results, as consumers gravitate towards the most affordable options.

Is BYD a real threat for North American automakers?

In short, yes, it is. Some experts worry about these affordable Chinese EVs flooding the North American market. According to the Alliance for American Manufacturing, they warn of a potential “extinction-level event” for the local automotive industry.

BYD has been rapidly expanding globally. A BYD factory in Mexico could pave the way for vehicles to make a big splash in North America.

President Joe Biden raised tariffs to protect domestic industries from cheaper Chinese goods. This increase aims to boost local production by reducing competitive pressures. Even with tariffs, there is no doubt that the Chinese EV cars will remain more affordable than the North American makes.

How can US automakers compete with BYD?

Automakers should adopt Tesla’s methods of vertical integration and cost reduction. This strategy will make their production processes more efficient. They must also focus on creating more affordable electric vehicles. Investing in innovative battery technology will help compete with lower-priced competitors like BYD.

BYD adopted a key strategy that is different from that of US automakers. Instead of converting their existing lineup of cars, BYD focused on deeply understanding customer preferences. As a result, BYD’s EVs are designed to meet customer expectations and needs.

North American automakers can capitalize on brand loyalty and superior quality perception to differentiate themselves from BYD. They can consider strategies like those implemented by the French government regarding consumer purchase subsidies. France has structured subsidies to favor EVs with lower upstream production emissions. Given their cleaner electricity grids, this approach gives French and Western EVs a competitive edge over Chinese EVs.

Instead of artificially inflating the prices of clean technologies, US automakers should focus on supporting other automakers to improve their industry standing. Ultimately, automakers should aim to offer budget-friendly electric vehicles. This would provide consumers with affordable options like the Seagull EV.
