Strengthening the seal in a downhole fiber connector.

A high-performance engineered components manufacturer had seen early failures in the brazed seal of a fiber optic connector used in oil wells. We reviewed brazing and sputtering improvements and gave the client a clear process to make the part last longer.

The Client

The client makes a fiber optic connector for oil wells, using a brazing technique to create a high-pressure seal around the fibers. Some units had failed early because of the braze between the optical fiber and the metal body.

The Challenge

Fix the braze.
Keep the process.

Prescouter was asked to find improvements to the brazing recipe and process, and to the sputtering process, that would make the product last longer without moving too far from the existing process.

  • Recipe

    Brazing formula

Changes to the braze that could give a longer-lasting seal.

  • Process

    Brazing method

Better ways to apply the braze around the fibers.

  • Coating

    Sputtering

Improvements to the metal layer that bonds to the fiber.

The Outcome

A defined process for a longer-lasting seal.

Prescouter delivered a clear process for the client to follow, with a list of questions to understand the recommended processes, details and key parameters. It also flagged possible points of failure and proposed solutions for each.

  • Process

    A step-by-step plan

A defined path to a more durable seal.

  • Questions

    What to check

    The parameters that matter most.

  • Risks

    Failure points and fixes

Where things can go wrong and how to prevent it.

A small seal can decide whether a part survives a well. Small, well-chosen changes to an existing process are often the fastest fix.
