Proven Outcomes

Market analysis in action.

Examine how we've helped enterprise teams size unfamiliar markets, separate real growth from noise, and reach entry and investment decisions their boards could defend.

A European Insurance Holding Company

Sizing the Emerging Smart Living Market

The Challenge

Assisted and smart living was shifting from an elderly-care category to a millennial one. The client needed to judge market attractiveness and growth across several European countries before committing investment.

The Solution

We sized the market from construction, community and demographic data, then widened the client's competitor list. The 100+ page deliverable covered 7 countries, narrowing to one target market where we studied 5 cities and profiled 23 major players, saving 6 to 12 months of internal study.

A North American Food Packaging Provider

Market Analysis of Molded Fiber Food Packaging

The Challenge

Molded fiber containers were gaining ground as a sustainable option for fresh food. The client, serving deli, bakery, convenience and foodservice customers, needed a technology landscape and a market overview before entering.

The Solution

We assessed size, growth and segmentation, then profiled 32 key companies on portfolios, specifications, end-use applications, pricing and compostability claims. Growth and net sales came from financial and sustainability reporting, and 332 products were examined to establish popular dimensions.

A Global Functional Ingredients Supplier

Growth Opportunities for Chia Seed Mucilage

The Challenge

The client needed to know where growth was occurring, how the market segmented, and what competitors were doing around one of its core products. The data required to act on any of it was not available from public sources.

The Solution

We ran 14 interviews with subject matter experts covering the market, operations and formulation, extracting segmentation, trends and future opportunities from inside the space. Competitor activity was reconstructed from investor publications, news, patents, partnerships and acquisitions.

A Leader in Consumer Goods

Entering a New Market Category

The Challenge

The client was weighing entry into the cabinet market and needed to understand how demand was shifting, alongside whether its existing distribution channels offered any real advantage against incumbents.

The Solution

With Advanced Degree Researchers and subject matter experts, we mapped the cabinet supply chain: major OEMs, top retailers, channels to market, pricing and margins, disruptors and the labor market. The client received a SWOT analysis and a stage-gated entry path built on the synergies we found.

A Leading Biotechnology Company

Commercial Potential Across Biopolymers

The Challenge

The client wanted to know which biopolymers held genuine commercial potential as coatings, adhesives, films and sensors, and specifically where a biopolymer would beat the solutions already on the market.

The Solution

We screened protein and polypeptide research for novelty, impact and commercial potential, then interviewed experts in the two strongest fields on trends and adoption barriers. Hydrophobins emerged as a disruptor in surface modification, while bioadhesives were not yet viable against synthetics.

Why It Matters

Why invest in market trends & sizing

Companies invest in market analysis to replace headline estimates with defensible evidence - clarifying commercial opportunities, testing growth assumptions and improving market, investment and expansion decisions.

Unreliable Market Estimates

A headline forecast can appear precise while hiding the assumptions behind it. We document every source and input, model a defensible range and show what changes the result - so your numbers stand up to scrutiny.

Misaligned Market Definitions

Standard market categories are built for broad audiences and may include products, customers or regions outside your opportunity. We define the market with your team first, ensuring the analysis reflects how your business actually competes.

Unproven Market Trends

Not every emerging signal develops into sustained demand. We test its strength, timing and relevance against adoption data, customer behavior and expert insight - separating meaningful market shifts from short-lived attention.

Missing Market Data

Published data is often limited in new, fragmented or specialized markets. We build the estimate from supply- and demand-side evidence, reconcile the findings and validate critical assumptions with people working in the market.

Our Services

Market intelligence built for better decisions.

Market Sizing & Growth Modeling

Headline market figures rarely reflect the opportunity for your specific product. We define the market around your customers, applications and regions, then reconcile multiple sizing models to support investment and expansion decisions.

Market Trends & Forecasting

Market shifts often begin before they appear in standard reports. We track growth, decline and saturation signals, then examine the drivers behind them so your team can respond with greater confidence.

Market Opportunity Assessment

A large market is not always an attractive opportunity. We assess growth drivers, competitive intensity, entry barriers and regional dynamics to identify where your business has the strongest case to act.

Segment Opportunity Analysis

Broad market averages can hide the segments creating the most value. We define, size and compare customer groups based on growth, strategic fit and accessibility so you know where to focus.

Competitive Benchmarking

Market position means little without understanding what is changing around it. We compare relevant competitors across pricing, capacity, channel access and technical differentiation to explain who is gaining ground and why.

Voice of Customer Research

Market data cannot fully explain why customers make decisions. We speak directly with buyers, specifiers and end users to understand purchasing priorities, willingness to pay and unmet needs.

How It Works

Our market analysis process.

Four focused stages, managed by a specialist project team to take you from your initial market question to a validated, decision-ready opportunity assessment in 2–4 weeks.

Define the Decision

We clarify the decision your team needs to make, then define the market boundaries, target segments, geographies and evaluation criteria that will guide the analysis.

Map the Market

We combine market data, trade flows, company filings, patents, competitive intelligence and customer signals to map demand, supply, competition and growth across the market.

Validate the Evidence

We test market estimates, trend signals and critical assumptions through expert interviews, primary research and adoption evidence - separating meaningful market change from unsupported projections.

Size & Prioritize

We reconcile the findings into a transparent market model, compare the strongest opportunities and recommend where to act across market entry, expansion, investment and portfolio decisions.

What We Look For

We don't recommend the largest market.
We recommend the most defensible one.

The right market is not always the biggest or fastest-growing. Every opportunity is assessed across four dimensions - sixteen checks applied consistently, every time.

Dimension 01 / 04 Size & Structure

Is the opportunity large enough and accessible?

We define the market precisely, determine how much is realistically addressable, and identify where value and opportunity are concentrated.

What we assess
01Market definition and boundaries
02Total, serviceable and obtainable market
03Segment and regional breakdown
04Value distribution across the chain
Dimension 02 / 04 Growth & Direction

Will the opportunity continue to grow?

We examine what is driving market growth, test whether adoption is supported by evidence, and assess the risks that could slow future demand.

What we assess
01Historical and forecast growth rates
02Adoption evidence behind each trend
03Market drivers and growth constraints
04Saturation and substitution risk
Dimension 03 / 04 Competitive Position

Can you win a share worth having?

We assess who controls the market, how competitors are positioned, and what could make it difficult for a new or existing offer to gain ground.

What we assess
01Competitor share and market concentration
02Competitor capacity and differentiation
03Barriers to entry and switching costs
04Market-share movement and its drivers
Dimension 04 / 04 Customer Demand

Do buyers actually want this?

We examine what customers need, what influences their decisions, and whether there is enough willingness and authority to support real demand.

What we assess
01Unmet needs and purchase drivers
02Willingness to pay
03Buying process and decision-making units
04Customer evidence and demand signals

Our Sizing Methodology

Three ways to size a market. We use more than one on purpose.

Top-Down: Start Wide, Narrow Down

Trade flows, filings, and industry statistics narrowed to your market. Fast, and a boundary check on the other two.

Supply Side: Add Up Who Sells It

The market rebuilt from what each supplier ships, including private players absent from published totals.

Demand Side: Count the Buyers

End users, application rates, and consumption per unit, calibrated through interviews.

When the methods disagree

  • Each method has its own assumption list, so a difference traces to one input.
  • Contested assumptions go to experts operating in that market.
  • You get a range with a central case, and assumptions stay live in the model.

How experts validate the work

  • Experts are matched to the question and screened for operating experience.
  • Interviews run across buyers, suppliers, distributors, and regulators.
  • Where an expert contradicts the data, the figure is revised or flagged, never averaged away.

Behind the Analysis

Market Intelligence Sources

Intelligence vectors:
What We Avoid

Numbers alone are not enough.
We look beyond them.

Using a Market Definition That Does Not Fit

The Pitfall

The Category Mismatch

Published reports often define markets around broad categories that do not match your product, customer, region or route to market. Even accurate data can mislead when the boundaries are wrong.

Our Approach

Decision-Led Market Definition

We clarify the decision, target segments, geographies and inclusion criteria first, then build the analysis around the opportunity your team can actually pursue.

Outcome

A Market You Can Defend

Your market size is tied to clear boundaries and assumptions, giving stakeholders a consistent basis for investment, entry or expansion decisions.

Treating Published Forecasts as Fact

The Pitfall

False Precision

One report can produce a clean number without revealing its assumptions, age or methodology. Conflicting estimates then create false confidence rather than clarity.

Our Approach

Triangulated Market Modelling

We compare public, proprietary and expert sources, reconcile conflicting estimates and test assumptions against scenarios, regional indicators and observable market activity.

Outcome

Numbers That Hold Up

You receive a transparent sizing and growth model with traceable inputs, defensible ranges and a clear explanation of what could change the forecast.

Mistaking Attention for Real Demand

The Pitfall

The Signal-Noise Problem

Trend visibility is not proof of adoption. Headlines, funding announcements and short-term attention can make weak signals look like durable demand.

Our Approach

Evidence-Based Signal Validation

We test each trend against adoption patterns, expert input, customer evidence, market drivers and timing to distinguish sustained movement from temporary noise.

Outcome

Shifts Worth Acting On

You can see which trends are strengthening, declining or approaching saturation and when they are likely to affect your market.

Sizing a Market Without Testing Accessibility

The Pitfall

The Headline Market Trap

A large total market says little about how much is reachable. Competitive pressure, switching costs, buyer priorities and value-chain dynamics can reduce the opportunity significantly.

Our Approach

Reachable Opportunity Analysis

We combine segment sizing with competitive benchmarking, Voice of Customer evidence and barriers to entry to identify where your offer can realistically compete.

Outcome

A Realistic Growth Path

Your team sees the segments with credible demand, accessible customers and room to win, rather than being guided by headline market size.

Stopping at the Market Report

The Pitfall

The Report Handoff

Many projects end with data, charts and observations but leave your team to decide what matters and what should happen next.

Our Approach

Decision-Ready Recommendations

We prioritize opportunities, explain the drivers and risks behind each one, and translate the analysis into actions for market entry, expansion or investment.

Outcome

A Clear Next Move

Your team receives a practical path forward, supported by custom forecasts, dashboards, expert validation and follow-on analysis where needed.

Common Inquiries

Frequently asked questions.

Market sizing quantifies how large a market is and how much of it a company could realistically win, usually expressed as TAM, SAM and SOM. Trend analysis sits alongside it and explains which way the market is moving and why. At Prescouter, both are built to answer a specific commercial decision rather than to describe a category.

When the decision is expensive, the data does not exist in published form, the internal team lacks bandwidth or domain depth, or the answer needs to be independent enough to survive internal scrutiny. An external partner with no stake in the outcome carries a credibility that internal analysis often cannot.

TAM is every buyer who could use the product. SAM is the share reachable with your current model, channels and footprint. SOM is what you could realistically capture given competition and capacity. Most investment decisions turn on SOM, which is the hardest of the three to defend and the one we spend the most time validating.

By building from the bottom up. In niche, industrial and emerging markets we count end users, application rates and consumption per unit on the demand side, and reconstruct what individual suppliers ship on the supply side, including private companies absent from published totals. Both builds are then tested with practitioners working in that market.

Top-down starts from a broad industry figure and applies filters. It is fast, but it inherits a definition someone else wrote and tends to run high. Bottom-up builds from real units, buyers or supplier volumes, which is slower and more traceable. Rigorous sizing uses both and reconciles them, because the gap between them exposes the assumption that matters most.

Through triangulation. Every material figure is built more than one way, cross-checked against independent sources, and tested with primary interviews. Sensitivities are run on the assumptions that move the answer most, and the result is delivered as a range with a stated central case rather than a single number with hidden error.

Published data tells you what is happening; practitioners tell you whether it is real. Every contested assumption and candidate trend goes to buyers, suppliers, distributors and regulators operating in that market. Where they contradict the desk research, the figure is revised or flagged, and the interview record ships with the model so your team can see who said what.

Most engagements run 2 to 4 weeks: market definition in week one, expert validation and sizing in weeks two and three, reconciled findings and recommendations in week four. A short custom trends brief can be delivered within 48 hours of the first call. Every project runs under mutual NDA, and outreach can be conducted anonymously.
