Mapping new uses for zeolites and other porous materials.

A global chemicals and materials leader that makes automotive catalysts from zeolites wanted to find other fields where its porous materials could be used. We mapped the emerging applications and helped the client decide which ones to target.

The Client

The client is a global leader in chemicals and materials, and an important producer of automotive catalysts built on porous crystalline materials. It engaged Prescouter through a Research Support Service Project to find where zeolites, and the related MOFs and COFs, could go next.

The Challenge

Look past catalysts.
Find the next applications.

Prescouter was asked to identify and clarify emerging applications for three classes of porous crystalline material, and the competencies each one would require.

  • Which materials

    Zeolites, MOFs and COFs

Three classes of porous crystalline material, each with its own route to new uses.

  • Where they fit

    Emerging applications

Application fields beyond automotive catalysts where these materials are starting to appear.

  • What it takes

    Required competencies

The capabilities the client would need to compete in each application.

Our Approach

Narrowing the field with data, decision matrices and expert input.

Patent and publication analysis
3material classes in scope

Start from the data

A statistical analysis of patents and academic publications produced a list of relevant applications for zeolites, MOFs and COFs.

Decision matrices
8applications shortlisted

Score what matters

Decision matrices built on the client’s key areas of interest narrowed the list to 8 applications, each broken into its major sub-application areas.

Expert input
3subject matter experts

Validate with experts

Three subject matter experts added insight and validated the research, with further interviews on the 2 areas of highest interest.

The Outcome

A strategy built on the right applications.

Prescouter’s insights and recommendations let the client plan its future business strategy around specific applications for its porous material classes, matched to the competencies the company already has.

  • Applications

Eight applications worth a closer look

A shortlist drawn from patent and publication data, broken into sub-application areas.

  • Focus

    Two areas of highest interest

Further expert interviews on the areas the client cared about most.

  • Strategy

A plan matched to its strengths

Targets chosen to fit the competencies the company already has.

A good material can fit many markets. The work is finding the ones where your strengths already count.
