Meta AI vs ChatGPT: Who Wins in 2026?

Introduction

In the Meta AI vs ChatGPT debate, ChatGPT still wins for most people who need depth, such as research, file analysis, sourced answers and multi-step work. Meta AI wins on free, instant convenience inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. The surprise is how close they now are, because both assistants got every task right in our 10 hands-on tests.

A lot has changed since Meta AI first launched. It no longer runs on Llama, and OpenAI has moved on to its GPT-5.5 and GPT-6 models. So most comparisons you'll find online are already out of date.

This guide walks you through what powers each assistant today, how their features and prices compare, how they treat your data, and what happened when we put them head to head.

The models

What's powering each assistant in 2026?

Meta AI runs on Muse Spark, and ChatGPT runs on OpenAI's GPT-5.5 and GPT-6 models.

Meta AI's switch from Llama to Muse Spark

On 8 April 2026, Meta introduced Muse Spark, the first model from its new Meta Superintelligence Labs. It now powers the Meta AI app and website, and it has rolled out across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger.

Unlike Llama, Muse Spark is a closed model. You can't download it or run it yourself, although Meta says it hopes to open-source future versions. Meta has updated it quickly since launch, and Muse Spark 1.3 arrived on 2 September 2026 with better coding and longer agent-style tasks.

ChatGPT's GPT-5.5 and GPT-6 lineup

ChatGPT now runs on a family of models rather than one. GPT-5.5 Instant became the default for everyday chats in May 2026. In September 2026, OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra, its most capable model, to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users.

You don't usually pick the model yourself. ChatGPT decides how much "thinking" a request needs, and paid plans let you push it to reason longer. If you want the background on how these models produce answers, our guide on how ChatGPT actually works explains the basics.

Where Llama fits now

Llama hasn't disappeared. It has simply moved out of the consumer spotlight. Llama 4, released in April 2025, is still available as an open-weight model that developers and companies can download, fine-tune and host on their own servers.

That makes the "Llama vs ChatGPT" question a different one from "Meta AI vs ChatGPT".

  • Pick Llama if you need full control over where your data lives, want to customise a model, or need to avoid per-message API costs.
  • Pick ChatGPT (or its API) if you want the most capable ready-made assistant and don't want to manage infrastructure.

Feature by feature

Meta AI vs ChatGPT: How do the features stack up?

On paper, the two assistants now cover almost the same ground. Both chat, search the web, read files and images, create pictures and remember your preferences. The real differences are in where they live and how far each feature goes.

Everyday chat and reasoning

Both handle everyday questions well, and both let you trade speed for more careful thinking. Meta AI offers an Instant mode for quick replies and a Thinking mode for harder problems, with a deeper Contemplating mode announced but not yet live.

ChatGPT works the same way but gives you finer control. You can set how long it reasons, and paid plans unlock GPT-6 Astra for the hardest tasks. In our tests, both reasoned through logic and maths correctly, so the gap here is about choice and limits rather than raw ability.

Web search and up-to-date answers

Both assistants search the web on their own when a question needs fresh information, and both show you where the answer came from. In our breaking-news test, each one found the right result from the day before.

The difference was in the sources they picked. ChatGPT went to the official Nobel Prize website, while Meta AI leaned on news sites. If you need answers you can cite in a report or a client email, ChatGPT's habit of reaching for primary sources saves you a step.

Reading files, photos and your screen

You can hand either assistant a photo, a PDF, a spreadsheet or a Word file and ask questions about it. Meta's Muse Spark model was built to understand images, video and audio from the start, so you can point your camera at something and ask what it is.

On a Mac, Meta AI's new desktop app (in beta since August 2026) can look at any window you share and give advice on what you're working on. ChatGPT's desktop app offers similar screen-aware help. In our chart test, ChatGPT read the image faster and gave a cleaner answer.

Creating images and video

This is where Meta AI pulls ahead for casual creators. It makes images quickly and for free, and its Vibes feed lets you create and remix short AI videos. Meta One subscribers get extra image and video capacity.

ChatGPT creates detailed images and follows instructions closely, and its September 2026 image update added templates, sketch-to-image and better editing. It no longer makes video, though, because OpenAI shut down its Sora video app in March 2026. If short-form video matters to you, Meta AI is the only one of the two that does it.

Voice, glasses and hands-free use

Both support natural voice conversations. OpenAI rolled out a new voice model in July 2026 that can listen and talk at the same time, so conversations feel less like taking turns.

Meta's advantage is hardware. Meta AI runs on Ray-Ban Meta and other Meta AI glasses, so you can ask about what you're looking at without reaching for your phone. ChatGPT has no glasses of its own, so for truly hands-free help on the move, Meta AI is the more practical choice.

Memory and personalisation

Both assistants can remember details about you, such as your diet, your job or how you like answers written. You can view and delete these memories in either one.

Meta AI goes a step further by drawing on what it already knows from your Facebook and Instagram profiles, such as your listed location and the content you watch. That makes suggestions feel more personal, but it's also the same data that feeds Meta's ad targeting. ChatGPT's memory can draw on connected apps such as Gmail, but it isn't tied to a social media profile.

Agents, scheduled tasks and connected apps

Both assistants can now do work for you rather than only answer questions. Since July 2026, Meta AI can plan multi-step tasks, send you a daily briefing from your calendar and email, and run recurring jobs like a weekly meal plan. These features started in select markets and are still spreading to WhatsApp.

ChatGPT's agent, called ChatGPT Work, launched in July 2026 for paid plans. It handles longer jobs across your connected apps and turns them into finished documents, and scheduled tasks can check for changes and alert you. Meta has also launched Muse, a separate personal agent app (US only for now), which is a different product from Meta AI.

Research and organised projects

ChatGPT is the clear winner for structured work. Deep research can read many sources and produce a cited report, projects keep related chats and files together, and custom GPTs let you build reusable assistants for repeat tasks.

Meta AI keeps everything it creates, such as slides, plans and mood boards, in one Artifacts area you can return to. It doesn't yet offer a dedicated research mode or project folders, so long, multi-session work is easier to manage in ChatGPT.

Coding and developer tools

Both wrote working code in our tests, and Meta AI's answers were slightly more careful. For serious development, though, OpenAI's ecosystem is broader, with Codex for agentic coding and a mature API.

Meta is catching up. Muse Spark 1.3 is available through Meta's own coding tool and model API, and Llama remains the go-to choice if you want an open-weight model you can host yourself.

The biggest practical difference is convenience versus depth. Meta AI is already inside the apps you open every day, so you never have to switch windows. ChatGPT is a dedicated workspace, with more tools for long projects, research and organised work.

Hands-on testing

We put both assistants through 10 head-to-head tests

Both Meta AI and ChatGPT passed all 10 tests. The differences showed up in speed, depth and small details, not in right or wrong answers. Each test had a clear correct answer, so we could score the results rather than judge them on feel.

We ran every prompt on 7 October 2026, each in a fresh chat. We used Meta AI's free plan in Instant mode and ChatGPT Plus at its default Medium thinking effort, and the prompts were identical word for word.

Reasoning and math

Test 1: Solve a seating puzzle

The first test checked pure logic. We gave both assistants five people, five seats and five clues, with only one arrangement that satisfies every clue.

Prompt

Five colleagues (Ana, Ben, Cara, Dev and Eli) sit in a row of seats numbered 1 to 5 from left to right. Clues: (1) Ben sits directly to the right of Ana. (2) Cara is not in seat 1 or seat 5. (3) Eli does not sit next to Cara. (4) Dev sits somewhere to the left of Cara. (5) Eli is not in seat 5. Give the seating order from seat 1 to seat 5 and briefly explain your reasoning.

Both assistants found the only valid order (Eli, Dev, Cara, Ana, Ben). ChatGPT explained it in four lines, while Meta AI checked every possible position before giving its answer.

Test 2: Work out the change from a purchase

The second test checked multi-step maths, where one wrong order of operations gives the wrong total.

Prompt

A shop sells notebooks for $4.50 each. If you buy 3 or more, you get 20% off the whole order. Sales tax of 8% is then added to the discounted price. Shipping is a flat $3.99, which is not discounted or taxed. I buy 7 notebooks and pay with a $50 bill. How much change do I get? Round to the nearest cent only at the end, and show your working.

Both got the correct change of $18.79 and showed each step clearly. Neither assistant tripped on this, which is a big change from a couple of years ago. If you're curious whether this counts as real reasoning, our piece on whether AI models like ChatGPT can truly think digs into that question.

Coding

Test 3: Write a function from scratch

The third test asked each assistant to write working code to a precise spec, including an edge case that trips up many simple solutions.

Prompt

Write a Python function merge_intervals(intervals) that takes a list of [start, end] pairs and returns a sorted list of merged intervals. Intervals that overlap or only touch (for example [1, 3] and [3, 5]) must be merged into one. The input may be unsorted or empty. Return only the code, with no explanation.

We ran both answers against eight test cases, and both passed all eight. Meta AI's version had one small edge, because it also handled a slightly different input format (tuples) that made ChatGPT's code crash.

Test 4: Find and fix the bugs

The fourth test gave both assistants a short function with two hidden bugs. It should return the average of the positive numbers in a list.

Prompt

This Python function should return the average of the positive numbers in a list, but it gives wrong results. Find every bug and give me a fixed version.

def average_positive(nums):
    total = 0
    count = 0
    for n in nums:
        if n > 0:
            total += n
        count += 1
    return total / count

Both found the miscounted average and the divide-by-zero crash. Meta AI went further, showing an example of the wrong output and offering a shorter alternative, so it edges this round.

Live facts and honesty

Test 5: Report breaking news

The fifth test checked live web search. We asked about the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, which was announced the day before our test, so neither assistant could know it without searching.

Prompt

Who won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, what was it awarded for, and on what date was it announced?

Both correctly named Francis Halzen for the IceCube discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and gave the right date (6 October 2026). ChatGPT cited the official Nobel Prize site, while Meta AI relied on news websites.

Test 10: Summarise a paper that doesn't exist

The tenth test was a trap to see whether either assistant would make things up. We invented the paper, the title and the author.

Prompt

Summarise the key findings of the 2021 Nature paper "Graphene Sponge Batteries for Arctic Drones" by Dr. Lena Okafor.

Neither assistant invented anything. Both said they couldn't find the paper and asked for a link or DOI, and Meta AI also pointed to real research on similar topics.

Test 6: Generate an image with exact details

The sixth test checked whether each assistant could follow precise visual instructions, including counting objects and rendering readable text.

Prompt

Create an image: a wooden desk seen from the front, with exactly three red apples on it, a blue coffee mug on the left side of the desk, and a yellow sticky note on the desk that clearly says "SHIP IT".

Both nailed every detail, including the readable text. Meta AI finished in about 20 seconds, and ChatGPT took about 50 seconds but followed the "seen from the front" instruction more closely.

Test 7: Read a chart

The seventh test checked image understanding. We uploaded this bar chart of quarterly revenue and asked a question that needs both reading and calculation.

The revenue chart we uploaded to both assistants
Prompt

Based on this chart, which quarter had the highest revenue, and what was the percentage change in revenue from Q3 to Q4? Round to one decimal place.

Both answered Q4, up 64.1%. ChatGPT replied in about 15 seconds with a clean formula. Meta AI took about a minute, built an HTML chart overlay nobody asked for and showed a formatting glitch in its maths.

Writing and following instructions

Test 8: Summarise a memo under strict rules

The eighth test checked summarising under tight constraints. We gave both assistants a 200-word internal memo and three rules to follow.

Prompt

Summarise the memo below in exactly 3 bullet points. Each bullet must be 15 words or fewer, and one bullet must mention the approved pilot budget. MEMO: To all staff, from Priya Raman, COO. Subject: Q3 operations update and Q4 priorities. Q3 was a mixed quarter. Revenue grew 12% year over year to $18.6 million, driven mainly by our new cold-chain monitoring service, which signed 41 new hospital clients. However, gross margin slipped from 47% to 43% because sensor component costs rose sharply after our main supplier in Penang raised prices twice. On the people side, we hired 23 engineers but lost 9, mostly from the field installation team, where overtime averaged 14 hours a week. Exit interviews point to scheduling, not pay, as the main issue. For Q4, the leadership team has approved three priorities. First, we will qualify a second sensor supplier in Monterrey by November 30 to bring component costs down by at least 8%. Second, we will pilot a four-day rotating schedule for field installers in the Midwest region, with an approved pilot budget of $2.4 million covering added headcount and training. Third, we are pausing the planned expansion into the UK market until gross margin recovers above 45%. Please direct questions about the scheduling pilot to Marcus Lee in HR and supplier questions to the procurement team. The next all-hands meeting is on December 4.

Both followed every rule and got the $2.4 million figure right. ChatGPT's summary was more complete, because it also captured the staff turnover problem that Meta AI left out.

Test 9: Name a brand under strict rules

The ninth test checked how closely each assistant follows several rules at once.

Prompt

Suggest 5 names for a sustainable sneaker brand. Rules: each name is exactly two words; both words in a name start with the same letter; no word is longer than 7 letters; output only a numbered list, with no other text.

Both followed every rule. Oddly, three of the five names were identical (Terra Tread, Green Glide and Pure Pace).

Pricing

What does each one cost?

Meta AI is free for everyday use, and ChatGPT is free with limits. Both now sell paid plans, but they charge for different things. Meta's plans mainly buy you more image and video creation, while ChatGPT's plans buy you stronger models, higher limits and an ad-free experience.

PlanPrice (US, per month)What you get
Meta AI (free)$0Chat, search, image creation and file uploads across Meta's apps
Meta One Core$7.99More Meta AI image and video creation (powered by Muse models), plus app perks
Meta One Premium$19.99Everything in Core, with higher creative limits

Meta also offers app-specific add-ons (such as WhatsApp Plus) and business tiers from $14.99 to $499 a month. ChatGPT has separate Business and Enterprise plans for teams.

If you just want a capable assistant without paying, Meta AI gives you more for free. If you rely on AI for work every day, ChatGPT Plus at $20 is the sensible step up, because it unlocks the stronger reasoning models and removes ads.

Prices checked on 7 October 2026. They change often, so confirm on ChatGPT's pricing page and Meta's Meta One announcement before you subscribe.

Privacy and data

How does each one handle your data?

This is where the two differ most. Meta uses your Meta AI chats to personalise the ads and posts you see, and you can't opt out. ChatGPT also shows ads on its free plans now, but it gives you more switches to control how your conversations are used.

Meta AI

Since 16 December 2025, Meta has used your interactions with its AI to personalise content and ads across its apps. Here's what that means for you.

  • There is no opt-out for this. You can only adjust your ad preferences and feed controls.
  • Sensitive topics are excluded. Meta says chats about religion, health, politics, sexual orientation and similar subjects aren't used for ads.
  • WhatsApp is separate unless you've linked your WhatsApp account to your other Meta accounts in Accounts Center.

ChatGPT

OpenAI started showing ads to Free and Go users in February 2026. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans are ad-free, and you also get more control over your data.

  • Ad personalisation can be switched off in Settings, under Ad Controls. OpenAI says it doesn't share your chats with advertisers.
  • Model training can be switched off by turning off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data Controls.
  • Temporary Chat keeps a conversation out of your history and out of training, though OpenAI may hold it for up to 30 days for safety checks.
  • Business and Enterprise data isn't used for training by default.

If you handle client or company information, the safer default is a business plan with clear data terms, whichever tool you choose. Neither consumer app is the right place for confidential documents.

Limitations

Where does each assistant fall short?

Neither tool is perfect. Meta AI's weak spots are privacy and polish, while ChatGPT's are speed on creative tasks and ads on the free plans.

Meta AI's trade-offs

  • Your chats feed Meta's ad system, with no way to switch it off.
  • It can over-engineer simple requests. In our chart test it built an HTML overlay nobody asked for and took about a minute.
  • It's weaker as a workspace. There are no projects, custom assistants or dedicated deep research mode for long, structured work.
  • Sources lean on news sites rather than primary or official pages.

ChatGPT's trade-offs

  • The free plans now show ads, and the best models sit behind paid plans.
  • Image generation is slower, taking about two and a half times as long as Meta AI in our test.
  • It doesn't live inside your messaging apps, so you have to open a separate app or tab.
  • Its code can be less defensive. In our coding test it handled the requested format but crashed on a slightly different input.

Recommendations

Which assistant should you pick?

Choose based on where you work and how much depth you need. For quick help inside apps you already use, Meta AI is hard to beat. For focused work you'll come back to, ChatGPT is the stronger home base.

  • Casual social users should go with Meta AI. It's free, it's already in WhatsApp and Instagram, and it handles everyday questions and images well.
  • Students can start with Meta AI for free help, then move to ChatGPT when they need longer research, sourced answers or study projects.
  • Marketers and creators can use Meta AI for fast images and social content, and ChatGPT for briefs, research and long-form drafts. Many people will happily use both.
  • Developers got working code from both in our tests. ChatGPT offers more coding tools, while Llama is the pick if you need an open-weight model you can host yourself.
  • Professionals and businesses should go with ChatGPT, ideally on a Business or Enterprise plan, for stronger research tools, no ads and clearer data controls. Our guide to boosting productivity with ChatGPT shows practical ways teams use it.

If you mainly want an AI that finds information for you, it's also worth reading how AI-powered search compares with Google.

Our verdict

Meta AI vs ChatGPT: Our final call

ChatGPT wins overall, but only narrowly. It gave the more complete summaries, cited official sources and handled the chart question faster and more cleanly. It also offers far more tools for serious, ongoing work, plus clearer controls over your data.

Meta AI is the best free assistant for everyday use. It matched ChatGPT on every test, made images faster and gave slightly more careful coding answers. And it sits right inside the apps billions of people already use.

So the real question isn't which assistant is smarter. It's where you want your AI to live and how comfortable you are with Meta's ad-based privacy model, and many people will get the most value from using both.

Common questions

FAQs

Is Meta AI more capable than ChatGPT?

Not overall, but the gap is small, and both scored 10 out of 10 in our tests. ChatGPT was stronger at summaries, chart reading and sourcing, while Meta AI was faster with images and more careful with code. ChatGPT's paid plans also unlock more advanced models and tools.

Are Meta AI and ChatGPT built on the same technology?

No. Meta AI runs on Meta's Muse Spark, while ChatGPT runs on OpenAI's GPT-5.5 and GPT-6 models. Both are large language models that work in a similar way, but different companies train and tune them separately.

Do you have to pay to use Meta AI?

No. Meta AI is free for everyday use in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and the Meta AI app. Meta's optional Meta One plans, from $7.99 a month, add more image and video creation and other app perks.

Can you use either assistant without paying anything?

Yes, both have free plans. Meta AI is free for everyday use, and its paid plans only add extra creative capacity. ChatGPT Free covers everyday chats with limits on uploads, images and research, and it shows ads.

Does Meta AI still run on Llama?

No. Since April 2026, Meta AI has run on Muse Spark, a closed model from Meta Superintelligence Labs. Llama 4 is still available as an open-weight model for developers who want to download and host it themselves.

Which is the safer choice for sensitive information?

ChatGPT gives you more control. You can turn off model training, use Temporary Chat and switch off ad personalisation, while Meta uses your AI chats for ads with no opt-out. For confidential work, use a business plan with clear data terms, and note that ChatGPT's business plans aren't used for training by default.

Are there assistants that outperform both?

It depends on the task. Other leading assistants, such as Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude, compete closely with ChatGPT on reasoning, coding and writing. Between Meta AI and ChatGPT, though, ChatGPT is the more complete tool for demanding work.
